Praying Children
The SIKH ORPHANS FUND is a volunteer initiative, based in England (Britain). It was founded in 2002, by a group of individuals wishing to provide financial, material and moral support to the invaluable work of helping the orphaned children of Panjaab - destitute and homeless. It diretcly supports the BHAI FAUJA SINGH CHARITABLE TRUST, based in Amritsar, Panjaab. It is based in Amritsar (Panjaab); adjacent to the HARMANDER SAHIB ('Golden Temple').
The TRUST is run by Bibi Amarjeet Kaur, a former long-standing school head-teacher and wife of BHAI FAUJA SINGH SHAHEED (killed in the Amritsar Massacre of April 1978 - equivalent of Ireland's Bloody Sunday). Since the late 1980s, Amarjeet Kaur has dedicated her life to the care and upbringing of Panjaab's orphaned, destitute and abandoned children. She and a small team off dedicated volunteers, undertake the daily upkeep, social care, education and welfare off the children they have embraced as their own.
The BHAI FAUJA SINGH CHARITABLE TRUST has now existed for 20 years. It is dedicated to providing a home, schooling and social and material welfare to hundreds of orphaned and abandoned children in Panjaab. Without the dedicated care of the TRUST, these children would be left to wither away, abandoned and destitute. The TRUST functions entirely on the moral and financial support it receives from individuals in Panjaab and across the world. The TRUST serves as home, a school, a family and much more to these disadvantaged and forgotten children of Panjaab. It has 200 children, aged 3-16 years.
The majority of these children are orphans from the wave of repression and genocide inflicted on Panjaab in the 1980s, intensifying from 1984. Many parents were killed in police custody, made to disappear and simply unheard off.
The TRUST was founded in the late 80s by Bibi Amarjeet Kaur, in a bid to provide the homeless destitute children of Panjaab with hope and a safe environment. She titled the TRUST in the memory of her inspirational husand, Bhai Fauja Singh (1936-1978).He was Fauja Singh was a much reverred, saintly figure in Panjaab; dieing in the Amristar Massacre of April 1978. His life was inspired by the 'SARBAT DA BHALLA' (care and service of world-kind) ideals of the Sikh Gurus (1469-1708).
