Picture of Paramjeet with the orphaned children in March 2005
When I went to the Amritsar orphanage in March 2005, I first took fruits for all the 200 children. They were so excited. Fruits are a luxury for them, which they cannot afford to eat everyday. Whilst in England we are taught to eat 5 pieces of fruit everyday, these children get 5 pieces of fruit a month. Every time I go and visit the children in the Amritsar orphanage, I wonder where they get their emotional strength from, as they they have gone through so much turmoil. It makes me appreciate what I have, and how easy my life is compared to these children. The children want more social contact with people from all parts of the world, even more than material stuff. Actual human support is much more beneficial than monetary support. I feel that these are my children, and I will not neglect them !! . Paramjeet Kaur, Co-ordinator, Sikh Orphan Fund (UK)
Since the start of the SIKH ORPHAN FUND in 2002, its Co-ordinator, Paramjeet Kaur has visited the BHAI FAUJA SINGH CHARITABLE TRUST in Amritsar on four separate occasions. Her last visit was in March 2005. The next visit is planned for April 2007.
During her visits she takes donations gathered in Britain the SIKH ORPHAN FUND for purchasing materials (clothing, shoes, books, pencils, etc) for the 200 plus orphaned children.
During her last visit in March 2005, she saw both the great work underway and the huge work that remains to be done further to give the children a quality of life that they deserve. Paramjeet Kaur speaks not only of the need for funding support, but about the even greater need for actual hands on support and emotional and counselling support for these hundreds of children affected by the turbulent conditions of Panjaab.
